Kate Capshaw, Unaccompanied

February 7 – May 12, 2023

Using oil on canvas, Capshaw’s portraiture explores themes of memory, history, erasure, justice, and honoring stories that are yet to be heard. Capshaw’s portraiture is a mutual invitation between her and the individual she’s painting—to move in closer, to inquire with respect, to identify and recognize shared humanity.

Capshaw’s work titled Unaccompanied comprises of 17 portraits and 16 studies honoring the stories of youth experiencing a range of challenges including homelessness. In 2019, three of Capshaw’s portraits were chosen among the work of 44 fellow finalists were exhibited at the National Portrait Gallery in Washington D.C. as part of the triennial Outwin Boochever Portrait Competition. The exhibit concluded its three-year tour in 2022 at the Kemper Museum in St. Louis, Missouri.
